Martin left academia at Freiburg University to join the Jocotoco Foundation so that his research could have an impact on wildlife conservation. Since joining Jocotoco he has grown the donations 12-fold, grown the staff to 115 and increased the land under co-management 41 fold. Jocotoco contributed to debt-for-nature swap restructuring U$1.6 bn of Ecuadorian debt in exchange for 60,000 km² marine reserve.
